In ordinary cases you are inspect instruments in all zones of CSSD. In dirty zone you should count instruments before decontamination process to be ensure that all instruments in special sets are coming in dirty zone (if special set not have all instruments we need additional information- instrument was broken, or missed, or missed in the patient?). On clean zone we are should inspect instruments on visual clean, collect instruments that was discollect before cleaning process (like laparoscopic instruments), making functional test, maybe lubricate instruments. On sterile zone we are should inspect packaging instruments on pack damage, check indicators on packaging materials.
So in decontamination process we are should take instruments in our hands several times on every zone with different reasons.

Hope its help.
